What is Brachycephaly?

Brachycephaly is a condition characterized by a flattening of the back of an infant’s head, which results in a wider, shorter skull shape. This condition often develops during the first few months of life, typically when babies spend prolonged periods lying on their backs. Factors contributing to brachycephaly include positional preferences, such as sleeping or resting in one position, as well as certain prenatal and postnatal influences. While it is primarily a cosmetic concern, brachycephaly can sometimes lead to complications, such as facial asymmetry or issues with jaw alignment as the child grows.

Symptoms of Brachycephaly

The primary symptom of brachycephaly is a noticeable flattening on the back of the head, which may be accompanied by a broader forehead and a shorter overall head shape. Parents may also observe that their baby has difficulty turning their head to one side or may prefer to look in one direction. In some cases, developmental delays related to neck strength and movement may arise due to the positional preferences associated with the condition. While brachycephaly itself is not typically linked to cognitive issues, early detection and intervention are important to ensure proper head shape and alignment as the child grows.

Treatment Options for Brachycephaly

Treatment for brachycephaly often involves using a cranial remoulding orthosis, commonly called a baby helmet. This custom-fitted helmet is designed to gently reshape the infant’s skull by providing support in areas where the head is flat while allowing growth in other areas. The helmet is usually recommended for infants between 5 and 12 months of age when cranial growth is most significant. Alongside helmet therapy, parents are encouraged to engage in repositioning techniques, ensuring that the baby has ample opportunities for tummy time and varied sleeping positions to promote healthy head development. Regular follow-up appointments with a pediatric specialist will help monitor progress and make any necessary adjustments to the treatment plan.
