Cranial Remolding Orthoses (CRO) | Head Remolding Helmets

Cranial orthosis or a remolding helmet is a specialized orthotic device used to treat Positional Plagiocephaly or Brachycephaly, which are caused by external factors such as prolonged pressure on the skull, leading to an abnormal shape or flatness of the head.

Cranial Remolding Treatment

The cranial remolding treatment, also known as helmet remolding or Cranial Remolding Orthosis (CRO), is designed to mold the baby’s skull’s shape gently by applying targeted pressure to specific areas. When a baby spends extended periods of time in the same position, the soft plates of the skull can become flattened or uneven, leading to the development of Positional Plagiocephaly or Brachycephaly.

Helmet therapy is highly effective in improving the head’s appearance and restoring a more natural shape. The helmets are custom-made to fit the baby’s head snugly and are worn for several months, depending on the condition’s severity.

Early Intervention is Important

IIt’s important to note that cranial remolding helmets are most effective when the baby’s brain and skull are actively growing, which is why early intervention is critical. The treatment is most successful when started before the baby is 6 months old for moderate head shapes and 5 months for severe deformities.
